Coexistence Clinics
For the Prairie Dog Ecosystem
Promoting Collaborative Coexistence for Prairie Dogs
We designed these clinics to explore the applicability of non-lethal prairie dog tools in an interactive, peer-learning environment. We are looking to reduce conflict in the prairie dog ecosystem and increase the use of coexistence tools in order for prairie dogs and their managers to thrive on a shared landscape.

Topics Covered
Homes on the Range
Homes on the Range is a large-scale collaborative prairie dog conservation initiative with valuable GIS data to offer you and assist in your planning.
Colony Analysis
Colony analysis and behavior is an early-stage planning exercise that helps seek to understand species and colony dynamics.
Vegetation Strategies
Vegetation strategies are tools that consider how prairie dogs respond to the plants around them in order to achieve a desired management outcome.
Barriers and Buffers
Synthetic or vegetative barriers create a visual buffer to keep prairie dogs out of unwanted areas. As a prey species, prairie dogs naturally avoid entering areas they cannot see through or over.
Passive Relocation
Passive relocation is a process that manipulates the habitat of prairie dogs, causing them to move out of disputed areas without handling the animal.
Active Translocation
Translocation is a multi-step process involving the hands-on collection, transportation, and release of prairie dogs with the intention of restoring the prairie ecosystem.
Please note: This was the curriculum for a session in Boulder, Colorado for agency professional and prairie dog managers. Topic selection can be tailored to each session and audience and are subject to change.
